Dear Friends –

In September, we kicked off our film and discussion series with Girlhood. This documentary follows the paths of two young girls from Baltimore City serving time in Waxter Children’s Center, focusing on the challenges associated with moving them back into the community. We were incredibly fortunate to be joined by a former foster mother of one of the girls featured in the film, who personalized the documentary by sharing her incredibly heartfelt story

This year, we decided to expand our film and discussion series to include speakers on relevant current events facing our local community. Our first presentation, on Tuesday, October 27th, looks at Maryland’s College and Career-Ready Standards (more generically referred to as Common Core). These standards form the foundation for Maryland’s new state curriculum framework. We hope you will join us in welcoming Superintendent of Harford County Public Schools Barbara Canavan and a few of her staff members to discuss how the implementation of the new curriculum framework impacts our students and teachers. We encourage a civil and respectful conversation about the future of education in Harford County.
